Putting a newborn into a car seat correctly starts with two things: a rear-facing seat that fits your baby and careful use of that specific seat's instructions. Car-seat models differ, so your owner's manual should always override generic advice.

1. Make Sure the Car Seat Is Appropriate for Your Newborn
Confirm that your baby meets the seat's minimum and maximum size requirements and that the seat is approved for rear-facing use at your baby's size. Some convertible seats are designed for newborns as well as older children; others may fit small newborns differently.
2. Install the Seat Rear-Facing
Install the car seat rear-facing according to both the car-seat manual and your vehicle owner's manual. Use the approved installation method for your seat and vehicle, and follow the seat's recline indicator or newborn-angle instructions.

3. Place Your Baby Fully Back in the Seat
Place your newborn with their back and bottom against the car-seat shell as directed by the manufacturer. Avoid adding aftermarket head supports, inserts, padding or positioners unless the car-seat manufacturer specifically approves them for that seat.
4. Position the Harness Correctly
For a rear-facing child, harness straps are generally routed through the slot at or below the shoulders, but always verify the exact routing instructions for your model. Make sure the straps lie flat and are not twisted.
5. Buckle and Tighten the Harness
Buckle the harness and tighten it until it is snug. A commonly used check is the pinch test at the shoulder: if you can pinch excess harness webbing lengthwise, tighten further. Follow your manufacturer's instructions for the correct harness fit.
6. Position the Chest Clip as Directed
For seats that use a chest clip, position it according to the manufacturer's instructions—commonly around armpit level. The chest clip helps keep the harness properly positioned; it does not replace a snug harness.
7. Avoid Bulky Clothing Under the Harness
Bulky coats and thick layers can interfere with harness fit. Dress your newborn in thinner layers, secure the harness, and place a blanket over the harness if extra warmth is needed. Never put padding between the baby and the harness unless the car-seat manufacturer allows it.
8. Check the Recline and Head Position
Use the car seat's recline indicator or instructions to set the appropriate rear-facing angle for a newborn. If your baby's head position or breathing concerns you, stop and reassess the setup rather than improvising with extra padding.
