Baby’s First 6 Months: What You'll Actually Use (and What You Probably Won't)

Getting ready for a new baby can feel a lot like packing for a trip to Mars. You’re not sure what you’ll need, but everyone seems convinced you’ll need everything. And it doesn’t help that there are so many baby products to choose from! Try walking down any baby aisle (or scroll through your favorite online shop) and you’ll see thousands of “must-haves,” each one promising to make your life easier.

Here’s the thing, though: most parents end up using the same small handful of essential baby items over and over, while the rest of those “must-haves” collect dust (or never make it out of the packaging). That’s where this post can help. Instead of throwing every gadget and fancy new baby item on your registry, we’ll help you focus on the baby essentials you’ll actually use in those first six months, and what can wait until later (or skip entirely).

Ready? Let’s keep it real and break down what’s truly essential for newborns and what you can live without.

The Absolute Must-Haves: Newborn to 6-Month Essentials You’ll Use Every Day

When it comes to newborn essentials, the list of things you’ll truly lean on every single day is much shorter (and simpler) than a lot of brands would make you think. These aren’t just “nice to have” items, though; they’re the essential baby items that make daily life smoother, safer and a lot less stressful. Let’s take a look:

  1. Stroller (Longevity Score: 2 to 3+ years) - Even the most minimalistic parents need a stroller. You use it so much! You’ll use it for neighborhood walks, errands and those inevitable nap-on-the-go moments. Before you shop for one, consider what's important to you, like if it folds up small, is made for jogging, etc. It’s one of those essential infant items that keeps proving its worth every day.

  2. Car Seat (Longevity Score: depends, always check fit and expiration) - A car seat isn’t optional. It’s the first and most important item on any list of essential things for a baby. If you already have one, double-check that it’s still within its expiration date and fits your baby's weight. A properly installed car seat is the definition of peace of mind.

  3. Baby Carrier or Wrap (Longevity Score: newborn to toddler) - Hands-free cuddles make life so much easier. A baby carrier helps soothe a fussy newborn, keeps your arms free for chores and is a game-changer for quick errands or crowded places. It keeps your baby close and secure, which is often exactly what they want.

  4. Crib Sheets and Safe Sleep Space (Longevity Score: years) - A firm mattress with a fitted crib sheet in a crib, bassinet or pack ’n play covers everything your baby needs for safe sleep. Skip the bumpers and blankets because they’re not recommended. This simple setup is one of the most practical essential newborn products you’ll use every night.

  5. Baby Bibs and Burp Cloths (Longevity Score: daily use for months) - Small but mighty, baby bibs and burp cloths handle spit-ups, drool and unexpected messes. They’re inexpensive, easy to wash and you’ll always be glad to have extras on hand.

  6. Baby Towels and Washcloths (Longevity Score: newborn stage and beyond) - Soft, hooded towels help keep your baby warm after baths, while gentle washcloths protect delicate newborn skin. They don’t take up much space, but they make everyday routines feel a bit cozier.

  7. Feeding Basics: Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding or both, you’ll need bottles, a few burp cloths and possibly a nursing pillow. These are the everyday basics that help keep feeding time calmer and cleaner.

  8. Diapers and Wipes: Obvious, but truly essential. Whether you choose cloth or disposable, you’ll go through plenty every day.

  9. Basic Grooming and Health Kit: A few items like baby nail clippers, a thermometer and infant Tylenol (ask your pediatrician first) belong in every nursery. They don’t seem urgent until you really need them, often late at night.

These are the essentials for newborns you’ll reach for every single day. Focus on this list first, and you’ll be ready for whatever those first six months bring, without filling your home (and your registry) with things you’ll never use.

Nice to Have (Sanity-Savers, but Not Make-or-Break)

Once you’ve got your list of essential newborn products covered, there are a handful of extra items that aren’t strictly necessary, but can make those early months feel a little smoother. Think of these as nice to have, not need to have. Every baby is different, so what’s a lifesaver for one family might sit untouched for another.

A white noise machine is a good example. Some babies settle more easily with gentle background noise, especially if your home isn’t naturally quiet. It’s not one of the absolute essentials for newborns, but many parents swear by it for better naps and nighttime sleep.

A portable changing mat also falls into this category. Sure, you could change your baby on a blanket or towel, but having a dedicated mat that folds up and wipes clean can make diaper changes quicker and neater, especially when you’re out and about.

Then there’s a play mat or tummy time mat. Babies don’t need much to start building motor skills, and you could even just use a baby blanket, but a soft, colorful mat gives them a safe spot to stretch, kick and practice lifting their heads. It isn’t one of the must-have essential baby items, but it can help encourage development and keep things a bit more interesting.

And finally, a bouncer chair can give you a few extra minutes to shower, cook or eat while keeping your baby safely nearby. Again, it’s not essential, but it's one of those small breaks that can make a really big difference.

While these extras aren’t on the core list of newborn essentials we talked about, they can be worth considering once you’ve covered the basics, especially if they fit your space, lifestyle and budget.

Save Your Money: Things You Probably Won't Use (at Least in the First 6 Months)

When you’re building your list of essential newborn products, it helps to know what isn’t essential, too! Here are a few things many parents buy early, and don’t use as often as they had hoped.

  1. Wipe Warmer - Babies honestly don’t mind room-temperature wipes nearly as much as we think. Plus, warmers can dry out your wipes faster than you'd like.

  2. Fancy Frilly Blankets & Crib Bedding Sets - They’re adorable in photos, but not safe for sleep. A fitted crib sheet is all you really need in those first months.

  3. Newborn Shoes - Tiny shoes look sweet, but they fall off (and get lost) faster than you can imagine. Stick to socks or footed sleepers to keep those little toes warm.

  4. Bottle Sterilizer - For healthy, full-term babies, the dishwasher or a quick wash with hot, soapy water works just fine.

  5. Baby Food Maker - You won’t need this until around six months when your baby starts solids, and even then, a regular blender or fork does the job just as well.

  6. Shopping Cart Cover / High Chair - These aren’t really useful until your baby can sit up on their own. This is usually after the six month mark.

Keeping your focus on true newborn essentials (and skipping the rest for now) helps you save money, clears some space and starts those first months with a little less clutter and a lot more calm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Now that we’ve talked about the essentials baby needs and the things they really don’t, let’s address a few frequently asked questions. This will make sure that you’ve got all of the information to make good decisions about baby’s needs.

What do babies truly need for the first 6 months?

When it comes down to it, babies don’t need as much as the baby aisle makes you think. The real newborn essentials focus on safety, feeding, warmth and comfort: a safe sleep space with a fitted sheet, a car seat, diapers and wipes, bottles or breastfeeding supplies, basic clothing and a few small extras like baby bibs and towels. Those are the essential baby items you’ll lean on every single day.

What is the only essential food a baby needs for the first 6 months?

Just breast milk or infant formula, nothing else, not even water. Both provide all the nutrition and hydration your baby needs in those early months, making them the most important part of your list of essential newborn products.

What can babies under 6 months not have?

Babies should avoid honey (risk of botulism), salt, sugar, whole nuts, raw or lightly cooked eggs, certain cheeses and anything solid. Sticking to milk or formula only is safest until your baby is ready and old enough to start solids, usually around the six-month mark.

The first six months aren’t really about having every baby gadget on the market; they’re about cuddles, feeding and getting through each day (and night) as best you can. Focusing on real newborn essentials and skipping the extras keeps things simpler, your space clearer and your mind calmer.

Remember: less clutter usually means less stress. Your baby doesn’t need a mountain of gear; they need a safe place to sleep, something to eat and you. Those core essentials for newborns really do cover what matters most.

And when in doubt, keep this in mind: everything is a phase. The newborn stage feels long when you’re in it, but it flies by faster than you’d think. Your love, patience and a few truly essential baby items are what your baby really needs to thrive. And you’ve already got the most important thing covered. They have you!
